Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF)

Mwaka Kogwa Festival
Mwaka Kogwa has its origin in the Zoroastrian religion. It’s a traditional Shirazi or Persian New Year celebration happening in Zanzibar. This event features a series of events in the Makunduchi village, in southern Unguja.
The celebration begins with mock fights between men with banana stems, symbolizing the release of previous grudges and winning peace for the coming year. The ladies, all decked out in their finest attire, sing age-old love, family, and prosperity songs in melodious loveliness at the event.
The second major attraction is the ancient ritual thatching hut-burning ceremony conducted by a traditional healer (mganga), who interprets the smoke patterns to predict the future of the community for the upcoming year. The festival is said to ward off bad luck and bring prosperity.
Apart from that the ceremony also involves colorful taarab music, drumming, dancing, and a communal feast of Swahili cuisine.

Sauti za Busara:
Sauti za Busara means “Sounds of Wisdom,” It’s a not-to-be-missed African music festival held in the Stone Town of Zanzibar in February every year. Here, you’ll sing, dance, enjoy magical events, and more importantly listen to a diverse of African music – say Bongo Flava, Afrobeat, Amapiano, and classical taarab.
Inspired by the stunning beaches of Zanzibar, Sauti za Busara brings together vibes from different parts of the world. You can head out to meet different cultures. For three days, this festival changes locations within the Stone Town to make sure it entertains everyone.

Zanzibar Beach and Watersports Festival
Every September sees the kickoff of Zanzibar Beach and Watersports Festival. It aims at adventure, recreation, culture, and watersports. Participants can compete for prizes in sports like kite surfing, paddleboarding, and beach volleyball.

This has started recently. It’s an eight-day celebration in the coastal region of Kizimkazi. The festival highlight Zanzibar’s rich culture and tourism. It’s filled with a series of events such that 8 days feel so fewer.
Those in attendance can engage in various sports, performances, dances, etc. There are also workshops, exhibitions, and a feast for the senses. Kizimkazi Festival happens in August every year.
